Machado Ties A-Gon on Padres' HR List in Romp at the Trop

Manny Machado's 20th homer of the season moved him into a tie with Padres legend Adrian Gonzalez for 14th place on the franchise's all-time list.

San Diego won Thursday night's series opener against Tampa Bay 11-4 for the first time since 1998.

Machado's two-run homer off Rays starter Luis Patino in the top of the fifth inning gave San Diego a 6-0 lead. It was Machado's third homer in the last four games and his sixth in August.

The Padres have now won five straight games and 12 of their last 15.

Machado is now hitting .295 with 51 RBIs and 38 runs scored this season. He is on pace to hit 40 home runs for the third time in his career.

Other key moments in the win:

  • Jurickson Profar led off the game with a double and scored on Trent Grisham's single.
  • Ha-seong Kim followed with a single, and Jake Cronenworth walked to load the bases.
  • Machado then drove in two with a single.
  • Austin Nola added an RBI single in the second inning.
  • The Padres broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning.
  • Machado's homer highlighted the inning, and Nola added a two-run double.
  • Grisham and Profar each had two hits and two RBIs.
  • Tim Hill got the win in relief of starter Blake Snell.

The Padres will continue their series against the Rays on Friday night.
