Cross Country Begins Season at Wyoming Invite

Laramie, Wyoming – August 31, 2023

The University of Wyoming cross country teams opened their 2023 season on Friday at the Wyoming Invite, hosted by the University of Wyoming.

The Cowgirls finished second overall, while the Cowboys placed third.

Cowgirls Take Second

The Cowgirls were led by junior All-American Emma Coburn, who won the individual title with a time of 16:45. Coburn is the defending NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Also scoring for the Cowgirls were sophomore Allie Kieffer (4th), junior Jessica Tonn (9th), senior Kayla Bailey (14th), and junior Laura Purdy (15th).

Cowboys Finish Third

The Cowboys were led by sophomore All-American Nico Young, who finished second overall with a time of 24:12.

Also scoring for the Cowboys were junior Joe Detmer (6th), senior John Haight (12th), sophomore Josh Adams (16th), and senior Sam Atkin (18th).

The Wyoming Invite is one of the largest cross country meets in the country, with over 3,000 athletes competing in 2023.

The Cowgirls and Cowboys will be back in action next week at the Colorado State University Joe Vigil Invite in Fort Collins, Colorado.
